At the Earth's Core, Prologue, Chapter One of an audio book novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs is now posted.
Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950)
Edgar Rice Burroughs was a prolific writer whose adventures stirred the minds and imaginations of his time, as well as for many generations afterwards.
Catching on to the frenzy of the times and the fascination with a Hollow Earth, he contributed his own version of what the interior of our earth would be like.
At the Earth's Core is the first book of a series called "Pellucidar," the name for the land inside our earth.
Naturally, the team to explore that realm was an adventurer and a scientist. David Innes, the explorer...very strong, Tarzan like character...matched with Abner Perry, a friend and inventor, played in the movie versions by Peter Cushing...the famous British Actor who would become famous as Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes, as well as a certain Death Star inhabitant, the Gran Moff Tarkin...as Abner, and Doug McClure as David Innes.
While the movie was not nearly as good as the novel, it did kick off a series of movie adaptations that continued the Pellucidar series to its final conclusion.
At the time I was a child and the mechanical beasts that were made to scare our pants off were quite realistic and stunning for the time, even if the acting and story was a bit on the weak side.
Fond memories still abound from those days.
Enjoy it with closed eyes and a cool drink to wet your lips. Let your imagination fly to an earlier time when men were men and monsters were their deeds of valor and beautiful maidens...well...were beautiful.
