This is a free short story based on my new novel, Excalibur.
                                       Snacktime At the Seven Eleven
                                                                      John Pirillo
                                                                  Copyright 2018

Arthur faced the man with the shotgun aimed in her direction. She held her service revolver aimed at him. “I die; you die.”
“Maybe.”
He smiled, his eyes devoid of warmth.
“I mean it!”
“So do I!”
“Looks like we’re going to hell together then,” Arthur chuckled, then fired and dropped at the same time and fired again.
His shotgun went off.
A second too late.
Buckshot spattered her backside.
Bastard!
She rolled to the right and back onto her feet.
He stood there, calmly reloading his shotgun. “I guess you’re not a vampire after all,” he said with a grin.
“A what?”
“Are you deaf, copper? A vampire!”
She looked at the bullet hole in his chest and between his eyes. She hadn’t missed. She felt cold shivers run up and down her spine. Where was backup when you needed one?
She’d been stupid to rush into the 7-11 when she saw the man with the gun. Superwoman she wasn’t; she faced something incomprehensible.
“What are you?”
He finished loading and put his shotgun in the crook of his arm.
The store manager was crouched behind the counter, where the gunman could keep an eye on him He glanced at him, motioned with his gun. “Come here, snack!”
The store manager, an Indian by birth from Benares, rose slowly with his hands up. “Please, don’t shoot me. I’ve got a wife and children.”
The gunman grinned. “Hell, no intention of ruining my snack.”
Then so fast that Arthur couldn’t move to stop him, the gunman’s right hand reached out, snatched the store manage by his neck and lifted him into the air.
“Let him down!” Arthur shouted, aiming her weapon again.
The gunman chuckled casually. “Look, why don’t we just call this even at this point. You shot me; I eat him and we’re all good.”
Arthur’s eyes weren’t on the gunman, they were on something else. She flicked her eyes back to the gunman, noting all the hair on his arms that hadn’t been there before they exchanged fire.
“Put him down!”
She edged closer to her objective.
The gunman sighed and shook his head. “We all get hungry sometimes.”
“I wait until I’m home to snack.”
She edged ever closer, her face to him, her back to what she wanted. The medicine section. A special bottle.
“You’re really starting to piss me off; if you hadn’t had garlic with your tacos, you’d be dead now.”
“Still got your shotgun.”
“That I do.”
“Then why not use it?”
The Store Manager’s face was turning blue and his hands went limp to his sides.
“Now!” Arthur screamed.
The gunman tossed the Store Manager to the floor and stomped towards her. “I hate bossy women!”
Arthur clasped the bottle she had seen, smashed it hurriedly and tossed it into the gunman’s face, which was slowly transforming into that of a wolf’s face.
He froze, spitting out the substance that had sprayed all over his face.
“What the…?”
Then his furry face exploded into flames.
He dropped his shotgun and gripped his throat, making choking sounds and then collapsed to the floor.
Arthur glanced to his right where the Store Manager was still gasping for air. “You all right, sir?”
The Store Manager nodded.
Arthur stepped next to the gunman, whose whole body was beginning to smoke now.
“Mercy!” The gunman begged.
Arthur held his service revolver up.
“Excalibur!”
Excalibur in its golden glory appeared in his hand.
He crossed his chest in the accepted Christian ritual, and then sliced downwards.
The front door of the store slammed open and Dakota came running inside, her weapon drawn, followed by two other policemen.
They glanced at the head that rolled towards them, still on fire.
Dakota looked up.
Arthur holstered his revolver. “How the hell did that happen, Detective Barnes?”
“I’ll need a report.”
“Got it.”
She turned to the Store Manager who rose slowly, eyes on Arthur. “You okay?”
“Thanks to the detective I am.”
Arthur grinned. “Well, that’s mighty kind of you, partner.”
Dakota laughed, and then grimaced. “Stop imitating John Wayne.”
“Who?”
“You know damn well who!”
Arthur blew her a kiss and head out the door.
“You know where to find me.”
“Like hell I do.”
“Then I guess you’ll have to try a little harder, sweet cheeks.”
Dakota screamed angrily. “Will someone kill that man for me?”
Sergeant Blake eyed her sternly. “Why do you keep letting that man get to you?”
She eyed him fiercely. “None of your damned business now let’s clean this place up and skedaddles.”
“Now you’re starting to sound like John Wayne.”
She gave Sergeant Blake a shut up look and he nodded to his men, one who went outside for a body bag and the other to secure yellow tape and call in to Central.
She eyed the burning head. “How can one man have so much hair on their face?”
But she already knew the answer. She just didn’t want to admit. Damn Arthur! Why was he always right in the middle of this Halloween bullshit?”
She took a deep breath, holstered her weapon and gave the Store Manager a hand up. “Emergency should be on its way as I speak.”
“But I’m fine.”
She eyed the tears in his throat.
“Cut shaving?”
He felt his neck and then gave her a horrified look.
Outside, Arthur was watching from across Martin Luther Boulevard, his eyes on the Store Manager touching his throat. He sighed. “Guess we’ll be seeing each other again, my friend.”
He turned around, shoved his hands into his pockets and walked away.
He’d know if the Store Manager was going to turn or not in the next full moon.
He hauled out the cell he was beginning to love these days. Thumbed on its recorder. “Note to self, my favorite 7-11, Store Manager. Possible werewolf turn. Check back in thirty days.”
He thumbed it off, and then eyed the skies. Not a cloud in sight.
The night was warm.
But behind him a dead werewolf was warmer still.

Working on a new series of stories about Merlin and King Arthur. This one is special to me because it explores more deeply how Arthur came to be who he eventually becomes and digs deeper into Merlin's mystical roots, his path of fantasy and magic, starting as a child.

We always wonder how our champions become who they are...the Superman, the Spiderman, the Thor or Captain America, and now I'm going for it and exploring them to the depth I feel they deserve.

This particular story digs into the earliest of roots of Merlin, showing how he became bound so closely to nature and the world of magic, and why it was so important for him to do for him ever to gain the humility and lovingness to foster an orphaned son...Arthur...and help guide a brutal world...the old Britains...into an era that promised peace and abundance for all...Camelot!

You can help me go further with this epic journey by purchasing this story at Amazon. com.

Purchase here! You won't regret the fantastic adventure this story takes you on.

It's only 99 cents now and that's a deal for the adventure and magic you will experience.

The Lady and the Sword
“A Young King Arthur Tale”
By John Pirillo

It was a sword sharp breeze that cut from the west that morning. Arthur swatted his sides to warm up, but it did little good .The needles of cold still darned his skin to his bones in a weave of iciness. He wiped at the snot oozing from his nostrils. It was hard. Freezing on his upper lip. He frowned. He hated when that happened.

“Snot nose!”That’s what the giant twins would call him, and then dumps him in a barrel or horse trough of ice water.

He had no intentions of that happening that morning or any other, so he sought a lesser known route through the small village of Amlot that bordered King Uther Pendragon’s Castle and the Black Tower of his mistress, Lady Morgana.

Arthur was a short lad, barely standing at a tad over four feet. But he had hopes of reaching at least five. He, like most of those of his age, didn’t truly start to show their stretches until they hit their teens. And he was still several years from that. Two to be exact.

His uncle, a reticent man, who spent more time ruminating on what the world should be like, than what it was like, had told him that morning to watch out for the Ilks. The Ilks ran through the storms this time of year, using its cover to do the harm they could, which was to steal souls and put them into stones and trees.

His uncle had told him, quite straight faced, that there were no talking trees but those that had been made so by the Ilks, but Arthur didn’t believe in talking trees or Ilks, so he had ignored the warning, as most village teens and youth did, choosing instead to plow through the cold, branching winds of winter without a care, knowing in the insanity and assuredness of youth, that nothing could touch them.

Arthur felt something brush his neck, and swatted at it. It stopped. Flies in the winter. They never let the villagers alone. So many lived in not much more than homes built of horse, cow and sheep dung welded together with buckets of water and whatever straw they could find growing wildly at the nearby streams and river, where the Ogres, Giants , Minotaurs and  Centaurs also dwelt. Though not so many these days. Most had been driven north by King Uther, who hated all forms of magic, except the dark magic of Lady Morgana, which Arthur suspected he only tolerated because of his love for her…or whatever a man like that felt.

“Tooossssskkkk.”Came a voice into his right ear, followed by a light touch on his head again.

That was no fly!

He swiveled around, hair standing on end on the back of his neck, ready to defend himself to the death if need be. Nothing t here.

“Tooosssskkk!” The voice whispered more urgently. Again, the touch on his head.

He swatted at the top of his head so hard he gave himself a headache for a moment. But he had touched nothing.

Puzzled, he pressed his back to Goodman William’s hut, which was a bit taller than most and more firm of wall. He searched up and down the narrow corridor of dung buildings, hoping to catch the miscreant that had swatted him and whispered in his ear.

Nothing.And no one.

He waited several moments, and then gave up. He had to get back to his Uncles to work on a cloak he had taken for task. His Uncle and he depended on the few coins he got for his work. He had been getting quite good at threading, so his reputation was starting to pull even the Lords and Ladies to him for purchases or repairs.

Taking one swifter look up and down the corridor, he finally turned his back to the east and ran up the corridor. He was fleet of foot, so nothing short of a demon could catch him once he started moving.

“Toossssskkk!” The voice whispered in both ears this time and he got a swat on his head that caused his head to ring for several moments, almost causing him to lose his footing and fall to the muddy ground.

He froze and searched about him.

Nothing.

Not a thing.

“Who’s doing this to me?” He asked the air.

“I am.”

He spun around, but saw no one.

“Where are you?”

“Here, Arthur!”

Arthur turned around to where he thought the voice was coming from, but no one was there.

“I don’t see you!” He hollered.

“I know.”

“Why are you doing this to me?”

“Why are you doing this to yourself, Arthur?”

Arthur balled his fists in anger. “I’m leaving.”

“It’s not your destiny!”

Arthur grimaced. “Oh yeah! We’ll see about that!”

Arthur ran along the corridor of homes, took a hard right, then a hard left and found the door to his humble home, which actually had some wood in it. Living wood. His Uncle had groomed several trees to grow together and used them as the roof. Everyone remarked about how extraordinary it was, but to Arthur it was just home. Plain and simple.

He flung the door open, slammed it shut and threw down a piece of wood to bar it.

“Now!” He muttered with a grin. “See you find me now!”

“I already have.”

Arthur spun around. In the depths of the large one room structure a form seemed to stand there. It could have been any sex. It just wasn’t that easy to see.

“Who are you?”

“Wrong question, Arthur.”

“What’s the right one?”

The form was silent.

Arthur sat down with his back to the door. He was bone tired from the help he had been giving the Tucker Twins, two elderly women who couldn’t walk outside or anywhere pretty much. He helped bring in wood for their fire, which meant seeking it, then carrying it from the woods, which were far off, and then cutting it to size and bringing it back. Back breaking work, but worth it to him. He just loved their silly sense of humor.

“Well, you just stand there and I’ll just sit here.” He told the form. “Uncle should be back soon and he’ll take care of you.”

Laughter.

“What’s so funny?”

More laughter.

“He will, you know.” Arthur insisted. “My Uncle is a very big man and he knows how to use that sword he carries. It’s sharp and can cut through anything.”

Laughter yet again.

Arthur blushed this time. He knew his Uncle only carried a whittling knife, and it was dull at that.

“Okay. You got me. What do you want?”

“What do you want, Arthur?”

Arthur sighed and shrunk against the door even more, dropping his head into his hands. “This is driving me nuts.”

“Arthur. Find me and you will find the way to your salvation.”

Arthur looked up. For a moment the form was revealed.

He jumped to his feet, so startled he couldn’t believe his eyes, and then he fell to the ground and bowed.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

He felt a gentle hand on his head.

“When it is time, Arthur, we shall meet again.”

He looked up into a dazzling face shrouded with clouds of pure white. “Who are you?”

“I am your Destiny.” She told him, giving him a big smile.

“I am your beginning and your end.”

“How will I know where to find you again?”

She smiled and gave him a tiny flower. “Where this flower will grow. There you will find me again.”

***

Merlin shuffled on the bed of stone he used for his resting place at night, adjusting the furs there to get more comfortable. He eyed Arthur thoughtfully.

“And have you figured out who the Lady was yet?”

Arthur nodded.

“I’ll show you.”

Arthur led Merlin from the cave. It was nearly full moon and the light was so bright it was easy to follow the path to the Lake of the Lady, a huge reservoir of water naturally fed by streams of water from the hills.

They reached the edge of the lake and Arthur pointed to a flower. It was the tallest of them all.
“Here!”

They were both silent. For a brief moment it seemed like everything in the world dropped to a hush, then the lake boiled and a mighty sword thrust from the waters. The most beautiful Sword ever made. It glowed with the light of truth and hope and justice.

Merlin smiled.

Arthur's eyes bugged out. "What is that?"

Merlin put an arm around his shoulder. "A promise for the future, Arthur. A promise for the future."

The Sword put off a burst of powerful light and Arthur shielded his eyes with his forearm. When he lowered his arm, the Sword was gone.

"Where did it go, Merlin?"

"A future. Where it is yours or not, remains to be seen."

Merlin gave Arthur a friendly pat on the back. "And now we must return home, I've got a nice chicken in the oven, and we wouldn't want to have fried chicken for dinner now, would we?"

"Chicken!" Arthur exclaimed. "I'll race you, Old Man."

Merlin laughed. "Dream on!"

Merlin stomped his magic staff on the ground and vanished.

Arthur stamped his foot angrily. "That's cheating!"

Then he grinned. "Chicken!" He ran back home to have the best meal of his life. For that day

This is the cover of one of two Young King Arthur stories I've added to my bookstore.

If you treasure the legends of King Arthur and Merlin and loved the Once and Future King by T.H. White, then you're going to enjoy the journey I'm taking you on with this series of exciting tales about Arthur as a teenager and the problems he experienced growing up in a kingdom run rampant with evil and lawlessness thanks to the evil King Uther Pendragon and Morgana Le Fey.

Take a peek when you have the time and the inclination.

It takes a long time to program this stuff, so I'll probably be dribbling them into the bookstore one or two at a time until I've caught up with all my works. Meanwhile...

Enjoy and have a great weekend!
