'The Shadow' began in 1930 as the Narrator for a radio show called 'Detective Story Hour' based on a magazine of the same name. The Narrator became more popular than the series and a 21 season run of 'The Shadow' series followed with actors in the leading role including Orson Welles (1937-1938), Bill Johnstone (1938-1943), John Archer (1944-1945) and Bret Morrison (1943-1944, 1945-1954).
The Shadow had studied hypnotic techniques in Asia and had the power to "...cloud men's minds so they cannot see him". As Lamont Cranston (Kent Allard in the magazine) his true identity was known only by his leading lady, Margo Lane (played by Agnes Moorehead (1937-1940), Majorie Anderson (1940-1944), Grace Matthews (1946-1949), and Gertrude Warner (1949-1954)).
The sponsor of the Australian version became so annoyed with being taunted with the words "...the Shadow knows" that he quit the program.
The Shadow was prime radio material with a psychological aspect that led to issues of public harm caused by realistic depictions of murder and violence being raised in parliament and the media.
